HISTORY OF THE CHURCH AND WORK

       In 1923/24, in São Paulo, the Beneficent Association of Santa Edwiges was born and along with it the donation of land for the construction of a Chapel in honor of the Saint. In 1926 the cornerstone of the first building was laid. Having no documents from previous years, in 1953, the Catholic Society of Santa Edwiges appears.

      By Decree of Archbishop Carlos de Vasconcellos Cardinal Motta, on April 21, the Parish of Santa Carmel was created Hedwig.

        No dia 25 de dezembro de 1968, nasce a Obra Social Santa Edwiges , non-economic, philanthropic, promotional, recreational and educational assistance, with the purpose of assisting everyone who sought it, seeking to improve the quality of life of people in general, defending them, organizing them and developing work together to the elderly, young people and children.

      On September 14, 1973, Fr. from San Jose. In 1983 construction of the Church began.

      On April 18, 1997, His Hon. Reverse. Dom Paulo Evaristo Cardinal Arns, elevated the Santa Edwiges Church to Sanctuary becoming the first Sanctuary in Brazil to be recognized as an Archdiocesan Sanctuary.

However, the Santa Edwiges Sanctuary Parish, with the blessings and protection of Santa Edwiges, maintains its founding mission (of a charitable association), through donations, help from its pilgrims and parishioners, providing human development in search of a better quality of life for the children, elderly and young people, present and assisted at Obra Social Santa Edwiges.
